Born
in Japan, Michi Nakao has always worked in visual forms, as an illustrator, painter,
and make-up artist. She moved to London in the mid-1970s. In Japan she
began working extensively as a stylist, choosing costumes for artists
appearing in photo- and video-shoots. It is from this intensive experience
in the world of fashion and music during the 1970s and early 1980s that Michi
Nakao's photography derives. This is the provenance of her elegant, beautiful
images. A strength of Michi's work is her ability to find majesty in
the mundane.
